Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the square: Plot
After Regina’s father dies, she comes to her home town to sell her estate without knowing the consequences. We see her greedy characteristic at first. The town is in a jolly mood because Christmas is around the corner. As Regina comes, anxiety comes into their lives. They start to protest against her decision. But she persists.
Then, comes an angel. With the help of Regina’s assistant, Felicity, the angel makes changes in her. Everything inside her starts to change gradually. We see the change when a child comes across an accident. We see Regina’s soft character.
Actually, she has another side that gets unfolded as the film proceeds. Screenwriter Maria S. Schlatter has woven the story very carefully. We get a glimpse of Regina’s biography.
There is no intricacy in the plot so everyone can understand the film easily. The audience could understand where the film is heading. Some heavy dialogues are there which teach us morality in life. The film ends with happy scenes when she says “I am not selling this town” inside the church. Happiness is everywhere. Everyone comes together.
Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the square: Music and performances
Despite being a very simple story, the most important thing is the music which actually enriches the film. With Dolly Parton’s pleasing voice and music composition, the film stands at an average rating. Lyrics are so touchy. The music captures you till the end. Note that you shouldn’t expect a better performance from her as an actress.
Christine Baranski has done a pretty good job. Jeanine Mason is also praiseworthy. Her witty character who doesn’t love her boss gives the audience a humorous approach to the film. Other characters are Treat Williams, Josh Segarra, Jenifer Lewis who are quite justified with their characters.
Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the square: Direction and Cinematography
Director Debbie Allen has done a good job. She is also the choreographer of this film. Every scene has been portrayed simply. The cinematography is good. The town has been captured properly. Some special effects add magic to the film. The film features 14 songs.
Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the square: Conclusion
Sometimes, you may feel there is nothing in the movie except for some heavy dialogues, lyrics, and music. So, this movie is not for everyone. It’s a pure 98 minutes entertainment film. If anything holds your attention, then that is only the music in the movie.
Do you believe in angels? If you have a penchant for musical fantasy or are thinking about some heartfelt and inspiring movies to watch on Christmas Eve especially filled with magic in life, this one would be worthwhile in this pandemic.
This film can give light in the darkness. As you watch the film, you will definitely feel Christmas surrounding you. The main subject of the film is “Change” which is necessary for all of us, at least in a different way.
I want to conclude with one quote from the film – “Light your lamp and spread the light”.
If you think this movie is worth your money and time, you may definitely watch and that is why I made this review here so that you don’t need to stress. By the way, Happy Christmas to everyone in advance. I pray this film illuminates some hope in this miserable time.
