Gulabo sitabo review: Hit or disaster

So Amazon prime video just dropped the classic Gulabo sitabo. Starring the great Amitabh Bachchan and Aayushman Khurana, is this movie becomes worth watching? Let’s have a look.

Gulabo Sitabo review:

Gulabo Sitabo review: Hit or disaster?

Gulabo sitabo is a dark comedy movie directed by Shoojit Sircar, starring Amitabh Bachchan and Aayushman Khurana in lead roles. The film released on 12 June 2020 with the audience having great huge expectations from it. (I mean, of course!)

The film was originally meant to be released on a big screen bit our good old coronavirus didn’t let that happen. This is kind of good too because the film could have been a total disaster if it would have been released in the theater because this kind of movie is hardly appreciated. (Not that I am bad mouthing the audience but let’s agree)

Gulabo sitabo: Storyline

Gulabo Sitabo review: Hit or disaster?

Gulabo sitabo is a film based on a really old Mansion, Called “Fatima Mahal” and its landlord Mirza, and the Tenants. The mansion is called so because of the owner Fatima, who is Mirza’s wife.

Mirza, who is basically the landlord of the mansion and husband of the owner Fatima, is in love with the mansion that he is literally waiting for his wife to die to make that mansion his own. He is so greedy that he could sell anything for some pennies, keeping in mind that he is so poor, even though he lives in a mansion where he has tenants and has to be dependent on his wife for money.

The tenants really don’t pay him so well and are planning the same as mirza, which is to get the mansion to themselves as they are living there for years now. (And Bankey paying Rs. 30 to mirza, in 2020, are you kidding me? And other tenants paying at average Rs 80)

Considering that, there’s no question why is so into money that he could sell anything that can be understood. Although he is the landlord of the mansion, everyone has basic needs. And that too is carefully shown in the film as you go on.

In this fight of mirza and tenants, specially Bankey, the film revolves around what the mansion really means to them and how it is as important as there basic needs. How all of them are trying to get the mansion and how they choose different paths for it.

Gulabo sitabo: Direction and screenplay

We all know how talented Shoojit sircar really is. His work of arts like piku, madras cafe, October is as amazing to leave us in awe.

The direction of the Gulabo Sitabo is pretty well done, showcasing the beauty of Luckhnow that how it crafted with these beautiful monuments all over, telling us the importance of antique old stuff. Reallocations, amazing believable mansion, and how destroyed the mansion really is, the film gives us what the story really has to tell.

Talking of screenplay, the film may seem slow to most of us in most of the parts. To involve all the characters completely, they really took lots of time to dig in and show us what they wanted to. The audience may leave the screen believing there’s nothing to see.

Gulabo sitabo: Acting

So the cast was amazing for this film. All the characters were bombs in their own way that whoever comes to screen won’t disappoint you in any way.

Amitabh Bachchan

Gulabo Sitabo review: Hit or disaster?

Amitabh Bachchan, who played mirza in the film, is unbelievable. This man can play the role of a child, and can still make you believe that you are seeing one. Yes, he is that Amazing.

The whole look of mirza, portraying a really old man, who is greedy and can never be someone’s own. The work of Amitabh Bachchan of portraying that how really weak and old mirza is a huge work of art.

Not only that, but you will also be convinced that he is greedy and can do anything for a mansion within 3 min in the movie. (Tbh I was 3 min in and saw Amitabh Bachchan, and teared up and said “Dude! This man can act” like duh! Obviously! Focus on the crying part. He is that good.)

Aayushman Khurana

We all know this young man and how well he is doing these days and how amazing of an actor he is.

He always tries to choose a unique character every time and bankey is one of them. He also tries to add a twist to his character all the time and in this one, he has lisp disorder, where the person has problems with pronouncing “s” or “z” sounds.

Although you could notice that he only does that in long scenes or slow dialogues and totally misses the essences of the characters in parts of movies. But other than that, he was as amazing as always.

Other actors like Vijay raj, Brijendra Kala, Farrukh Jaffar, Srishti Shrivastava played an amazing role as lead cast in the film.

Vijay raj is one talented man who knows to make his own position in a movie and Brijendra Kala is always known for making a character his own. A big surprise was Srishti Shrivastava who absolutely stood out in the movie. She plays the character of young bold Guido and has us our mind blown with her performance.

Is Gulabo Sitabo worth watching?

First of all, not only this, before watching a movie, we have to keep in mind what we are really watching. If you expect full-on action in a comedy movie, that’s a whole another thing (I am not talking about these days Bollywood masalas.)

The film is a great watch if you have the patience to really look into what the film has to say. Although the film may seem slow, with amazing characters and acting, this movie is worth giving try to. If you don’t like films without action or you simply don’t like movies which are not over the top, this movie is not for you!

Acting: 4.5/5

Direction: 3.5/5

Background score: 3/5

Overall rating: 7/10
