Ishq Aaj Kal started off as a daily soap romanced drama, now its spinoff has taken the shape of a thriller filled with suspense but very well sticking to its roots as well. Zee5’s experimentation is one of its kind, where it has produced an OTT web series as a spinoff to an ongoing television series. Here’s a review of the series Ishq Aaj Kal where we explore the plots and performances of the cast over the course of the four seasons.
Ishq Aaj Kal – Cast
|Angad Hasija||Arshad Ali Khan|
|Ankitta Sharma||Alia Jaffri|
|Paras Kalnawat||Faraz Sheikh|
|Puneett Chouksey||Ejaz Ali Khan|
|Roshmi Banik||Munmun Sengupta|
|Kavita Ghai||Naaz Khan|
Ishq Aaj Kal – plot
Alia Jafferi (played by Ankita Sharma) is the cousin sister of Kabir from Ishq Subhan Allah. Alia’s father has been charged and arrested with the murder of his wife and is sentenced to death. Alia tries to uncover the truth behind all of this. She soon moves to Manali where she works as an intern at a resort.
Ishq Aaj Kal – season 1
Naaz Ali Khan (played by Kavita Ghosh) owns the resort at Manali. But Arshad Khan (played by Angad Hasija) the nephew of Naaz, looks after the management of the resort. Arshad struggles with his own issues with his alcoholic mother.
We have our other characters of the web series in the form of other interns; Faraz Sheikh (played by Paras Kalnawat) Alia’s deceased mother and his father were suspected to have an affair. Munmun Gupta (played by Roshmi Banik) is dealing with her past and emotions. And we have Amaira Khan (played by Shagun Jaiswal) who is the daughter of Naaz and Alia’s father born out of their affair.
Ishq Aaj Kal – Review
The daily grind around the resort commences, Alia and Faraz strike right with Arshad. A couple of incidents play out where one guest tries to escape from paying the bill. And in another situation Alia also saves the life of a guest who tries to commit suicide on getting to know about her husband’s affairs. Thus the two of them are able to impress Arshad.
Alia and Amaira share a hate-love relationship, as at first there’s only grudges and bitterness between the two. But they are soon able to move past it when Alia rescues her from a humiliating circumstance.
Things take a turn when Alia discovers that her father actually might not be dead. She is caught in a cat and mouse chase with a stranger on call.
The same stranger blackmails Munmun to deliver drugs as she finds herself in this awful situation.
All four seasons of Ishq Aaj Kal have been directed by Nitesh Singh. Having done most of his work on the television side of the industry with various daily soaps to his name, Ishq Aaj Kal also tends to have a touch of that television melodrama. Not to mention the thriller aspects and suspense moods are spot on, but somewhere down the line the storytelling still has that vibe.
The performance of the cast is highly commendable. Ankita Sharma as the calm and composed Alia Jafferi is flawless. Angad Hasija and Paras Kainawat do a pretty interesting job, whether it be intimate moments or lashing out anger instants, they can handle that finely. Shagun Jaiswal with her character creates a good impact and aura around the web series. Roshmi Banik is one character who could have been explored more and in a much better way. At times even the acting performances of the cast seem to inherit in them that touch of daily soap drama to jump the line.
Ishq Aaj Kal – season 2
The second season of Ishq Aaj Kal sees the growth of the Trinity Resort and Alia soon gets an opportunity to travel to Mumbai and work there. Alia has discovered secrets from her past, including that her father is actually alive. Soon Arshad starts developing feelings for Alia. But Alia is stuck in another mess as she gets caught in a drug scandal at Manali. We have a newer cast entering the show in the form of Puneett Chouksey who plays Ejaz Ali Khan. Everyone is left shocked when Faraz makes an entry at the Trinity Resort, adding further to the drama and thrill of the second season. All this while Munmun has been missing and she soon meets with a horrific accident. The power-packed performance of Ankita Sharma steals the show again in the second season.
Ishq Aaj Kal – Season 3 & 4
Season 3 and season 4 of Ishq Aaj Kal subsequently explores the relationship between Alia and her father an the secrets that lie buried between them. Munmun’ death was not an accident but a murder, and we soon get a glimpse into that story and its killer. The whole storyline now turns away from its romance drama and gets into the whole thriller vibe, which is perfect for a bingeing experience. Faraz’ character turns more darker as he changes from a lover boy to a vengeance seeker. Puneett as Ejaz Khan is one of the stand out additions to the already stellar cast. His transitioning into the plot is very smooth and there’s a lot of surprise from his side awaiting you in the third season.
Ishq Aaj Kal is the spinoff of its sister television series Ishq Subhan Allah. We have characters of Kabeer and Zara coming over to this side but play very minimal roles just to maintain that link between the two series. Overall the bridge is a unique and intriguing idea to get someone hooked who has already been an audience of the former. The storyline and mystery-filled thrilling scenes are what makes Ishq Aaj Kal a decent watch.
