‘Me Before You” is a 2016 movie adapted by Jojo Moyes’ beloved 2012 novel of the same name. A romantic drama directed by Thea Sharrock is about “how it feels when you are loved”. The moment you will end this movie, you will be flooded by uncountable emotions from this tearjerker piece (I am not crying, you are crying).
You’re reminded that love knocks at your door secretly, a person can become your spring in the month of January and you just need to grow and grow in love without the promise of forever. Okay so without being more poetic let’s move ahead with this Hotsy-Totsy drama:)
"You only get one life. It's actually your duty to live it as fully as possible."

Me Before You Plot
LOUISA CLARKE is a bubbly, charming, and extremely adorable 26-year-old English woman who lives in the English Countryside. She used to work in a bakery that is closed now and this chirpy little soul works hard to get a job to run her family.
Finally, she gets a job as a caregiver of Will Traynor. Traynor is a wealthy banker who loved his life. Yes, I used “loved” because now he has met an accident and become almost paralyzed.
Will was an adventurous soul and he hates the part of his life in which he has to confine himself to a wheelchair. Clarke comes into his life and yeah well said ” love takes you to places where you never expected to go”.
She wants to make him feel that his life is worthy of giving him a chance. As Lewis’s songs suggest “So, before you go, was there something I could have said to make your heartbeat better”, yeah she makes this her only motive (That also costs her love life).
"I held him close and said nothhing, all the while telling him silently that he was loved. Oh, but he was loved" - Louisa
Me before you Acting
"Live boldly. Push yourself. Don't settle"
Claflin played the role of Will Traynor in the movie “Me before you”. A man who used to be full-on life is just left with mere existence. Will’s character is one of few male characters that I found as a perfect guy. He is smart but not nerdy, he enjoys sports as well as movies and books, he is a romantic but also good with jokes. And he is a mature, responsible man above all.
Even though he was paralyzed and had every reason to just quit, he fell in love with Louisa Clarke. He neither himself settled for less nor he wants Louisa to settle for less too. Even after his death he left her enough money to follow her dreams and encouraged her to live abundantly.
The ending was hurtful but yeah sometimes we just love the other person in such a way that they believe that they can be love themselves as much as we love them.
It’s really tough for an actor to understand a character who wants to kill himself and is already paralyzed. Claflin said in an interview that he had to be still and use muscles that he wasn’t used to using in order to manipulate his body into a certain position and sustain that for hours and hours on end. As an actor, he landed upon the demand of the character both emotionally and physically(Clap! Clap)
Emilia plays the role of Louisa Clarke in “Me Before You”. Emilia is known for the role of Daenerys Targaryen from the game of thrones. The main similarity between Lou and Daenerys is that both are incredibly strong.
If we talk about Lou, then sometimes you just feel you are driving to the new age Cinderella ( the only difference is that cute adorable joker’s smile(Joaquin Phoenix). Lou is chirpy, outspoken and an adorable girl with a crazy wardrobe.
She was determined to make Will feel that his life is worth giving him a chance. Emilia performed marvelously in the film. She poured every emotion of heartbreak person with a very profound yet realistic influence. I could see Lou loving Will, and I couldn’t imagine how she could fathom a life without him but she did. That love which did not stay forever, somewhere taught me how to stay in love.
If this movie makes you feel like spring then Emilia is definitely the Jasmin.
Direction, Screenplay and Other Discussion
Me Before You is directed by British theatre and TV director Thea Sharrock has directed this beautiful film. Jojo Moyes, who wrote the novel has adapted it into a screenplay and yes Sharrock enthralled her viewers with her direction. The whole cast did a pretty well job and even the protagonists gripped the persona of their character very well.
Let it be Lou’s fancy wardrobe and her bubbly nature or Will’s strong character and his dialogue delivery. The movie matches that charm with a bright color palette and a set of characters to complement Lou’s excitement. Other cast members did a pretty well job too but yeah somewhere I felt Oscar-nominated actress Janet McTeer could have offered much more to this.
The ending was definitely controversial (we will talk about it in the next section) but this whole movie felt like a soft music tone that I had known for a long time and somewhere had forgotten, it felt like a melody of great sweetness, has come back to me now i.e. A Beautiful Romantic Drama.
Me Before You Ending
Me Before You has the same ending as Jojo’s book of the same name. It was really heart-wrenching for the viewers to see Will committing assisted suicide despite falling in love with Lou. There was a lot of controversy over the ending because people felt that the movie is encouraging specially-abled people to take the same decision as Will.
But if you see this movie from the character’s point of view then it’s surely the opposite. From the starting, Will was portrayed as a man who believed in living life and enjoyed being full of it.
He never wanted to settle for less, that’s his character, that’s his story. For me, “Me before you” has the most sensible ending which most people seem to protest against, it’s very thought-provoking and extremely sad. Thea responded to the critics in one of the interviews and she felt really proud about how this movie ended. I will suggest that just give this movie a try:)
" You can't change who people are."
"Then what can you do?"
"You love them."
Me Before You Book
Me before you, written by Jojo Moyes is one of the best romantic novels of all time. It has two sequels also “After You” and “Still Me”. It deeply contrasts the lives of Louisa and Will- two people who fall deeper in love, oblivious of what fate has in store for them. Will, being a quadriplegic man has a desire to kill himself while Louisa, his caretaker tries to change his mind. The characters are beautifully flawed and it is just not about the romance but also the hardship of being an adult. It worked well and captivated readers with an emotional yet realistic journey.
“You’re going to feel uncomfortable in your new world for a bit. But I hope you feel a bit exhilarated too. Live boldly. Push yourself. Don’t settle. Just live well. Just live. Love, Will.” Watch Me before you on Youtube
