Spider-Man 3: The untitled sequel to far away from home
Tom Holland recently did an interview promoting his new film, Cherry. In said interview, he was asked about the third Spider-Man 3 movie. The question was about whether different actors who have previously played Spider-Man will be appearing in the movie, and Tom Holland said that they wouldn’t. This caused a lot of confusion, and also led people to believe that Tom Holland was lying.
Maybe he was, more on that later.
The internet is making it easier for more people to get access to spoilers, set leaks, casting information, etc. It is becoming harder and harder for any franchise to keep secrets from the audience. And truly surprise them during the movie-watching experience. Over the past few months, many scoopers and trades have reported some very interesting details about the third, untitled Spider-Man movie.
Let’s go over some of those details along with chatter about what’s going on with the movie. And some clearly open “secrets” that have come to light. POTENTIAL SPOILER WARNING! None of these theories can be confirmed. But if you want to go into the movie absolutely blind then this isn’t the article for you.
So the first MCU project to kick off phase four is the Disney+ streaming show named WandaVision. Which stars Wanda Maximoff and Vision, living as a couple in a suburban neighborhood. However, things are not as they seem when dark details begin to emerge and Wanda is set to face her biggest challenge yet.
Now, what does all of this have to do with Spider-Man? Well, it said that by the end of WandaVision, the events of the series will lead to a major boss fight between Wanda. And a certain mystery character that is so catastrophic that it will break open the multiverse and open portals to other earths. This of course ties back to the question about Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire reprising their roles as Spider-Man. But from their different respective earths.
Many outlets have reported that Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Kirsten Dunst, and Tobey Maguire are going to appear in the third Spider-Man movie. Knowing what we do about the multiverse, all evidence points to the fact that they would cameo in the film as their characters from different earth who have been accidentally brought to the MCU earth due to the events of WandaVision.
This is also an extremely clever way to resolve the shocking events of the mid-credits scene in the last Spider-Man movie in which Spider-Man’s identity as Peter Parker is revealed and he is now wanted for the murder of Mysterio. If the third Spider-Man movie showed Peter Parker being rescued or standing beside either of the other Spider-Men in public, then that would prove him innocent.
Along with the news about the other actors from the previous Spider-Man movies being cast. It was also reported last year that Benedict Cumberbatch would star in Spider-Man 3 as Doctor Strange. The MCU films have a trend where each Spider-Man movie gets one character or another to play a father figure type of role in Peter’s life. First Iron Man, then Happy Hogan, and now Doctor Strange.
Spider-Man 3 is the movie that comes out right before Doctor Strange 2: The Multiverse of Madness. What might happen is that WandaVision breaks open the multiverse, Spider-Man 3 takes place right after that which deals with the consequences of having multiple versions of Spider-Man appear in the movie, and then the second Doctor Strange movie resolves the multiverse storyline in the MCU.
It makes sense that Doctor Strange would be involved in this story, mainly because Wanda uses magic, and if the multiverse would be breached because of some kind of magical reason, then he would certainly know about it.
What all of this could mean is: Spider-Man 3 shows different characters popping up from other earths. Peter is confused as these types of occurrences have him in over his head. He goes to ask Doctor Strange for help (which happens quite a lot in the comics).
Doctor Strange helps Peter and realizes that something’s not right, and then Doctor Strange 2 deals with how the multiverse will be restored. And also resolves Wanda’s storyline picking up from the end of WandaVision. Since Wanda is said to appear in the second Doctor Strange movie and not the Spider-Man movie, it could be that Doctor Strange takes one movie to figure out what’s going on and who’s causing it. Then decides to take care of things in his own movie.
Spider-Man and Daredevil have a history of working together in the comics. And Daredevil is arguably the most popular character to come out of the Marvel Netflix shows. He also perfectly fits into the story as he is a lawyer and could help Peter fight the allegations against him in court.
It was reported by a few websites that Charlie Cox(who plays Daredevil) was seen on set filming Spider-Man 3. Another reason why Matt Murdock/Daredevil would be the only lawyer who would help Peter is that his super hearing skills allow him to sense someone’s heartbeat and know if they’re lying.
So he’s probably the only lawyer who believes that Peter is innocent. The size of Daredevil’s role in the movie is unknown. It might just be a small cameo. But the character is extremely beloved by fans. And they would be happy either way. It is also worth mentioning that both Daredevil and Jessica Jones are rumored to show up in the She-Hulk Disney+ show. Which stars the brilliant Tatiana Maslany as Jennifer Walters/She-Hulk.
Since Matt Murdock and Jennifer Walters are lawyers, and Jessica Jones’ job involves heavy involvement with lawyers. The addition of these characters into the broader MCU leads to exciting prospects.
Sinister Six is one of the most iconic Marvel villain teams, especially for Spider-Man. If the Justice League has the Legion of Doom, Spider-Man has the Sinister Six. It is already public knowledge that Jaime Fox and Alfred Molina will reprise their role in Spider-Man 3 as Electro and Doc-Ock respectively.
Now if the multiverse is in play, then maybe the Sinister Six aren’t all from the same earth? The MCU earth has not established its versions of Electro and Doc-Ock, it only has Vulture and Scorpion. What if the other members of the Sinister Six are brought here from other earths. And team up for one last chance to take out their respective Spider-Men. It would certainly be very satisfying for any Spider-Man fan to watch three different versions of the character team up with Doctor Strange to take down the Sinister Six.
A movie about multiple Spider-Men fighting the Sinister Six, sounds familiar? Yeah, this is the MCU’s take on the recent animated Spider-Verse movie developed by Sony. While it might not be a remake, there are enough similarities between these two projects. To conclude that Marvel is taking a go at making its own Spider-Verse.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is one of Sony’s most successful films. It has tremendous fan support and also won an Oscar for the best-animated movie. While the live-action Spider-Man 3 is less likely to be popular with awards voters, fans will be just as excited if not more to see all the different versions of Spider-Man come together.
So coming back to Tom Holland and his interview response. Maybe he was lying, but only to protect the secrets of the movie. There are also contracts that forbid actors to speak of any spoilers relating to the movie that they’re in. Spider-Man 3 is a long way off. But if even half of these theories are true, it could result in being one of the best and most ambitious Spider-Man movies of all time.
