Sunflower: Review, Cast, Plot, season 1, and Season 2

Zee5’s latest web series ‘Sunflower’ is a thriller with a side of dark comedy. A murder and a society filled with suspects is the story of Vikas Bahl’s web series. ‘Sunflower’ is nothing but the name of the middle-class housing society in Mumbai that the people who set the premise reside in. Thrillers are always an audience favorite, and Sunflower tries to take it to the next level by blending in comedy and gloomy storytelling. Here is our review of Zee5’s web series so that you can decide whether to watch it or skip it.

Plot

The series begins with the murder of Mr. Raj Kapoor and sets the tone right. The murderer injects poison into the coconut water left at his door. Soon the investigation duo of Inspector Digendra (played by Ranvir Shorey) and Sub-Inspector Chetan Tambe (played by Girish Kulkarni) arrive at Sunflower to crack the case. Little do they know what awaits them over there is a long list of quirky neighbors and uncanny members of the society.

And that precisely is the key aspect of the web series, the people at Sunflower. The whole plotline revolves around them, making society people the suspects of the murder of Raj Kapoor.

Cast and their characters

Sunil Grover as Sonu Singh

sunflower review

Sunil Grover plays Sonu Singh who is a thirty-five-year-old salesperson and requires everything rightly organized. As the evidence starts to stack up against him, he soon becomes a suspect in the murder mystery.

Ashish Vidyarthi as Dilip Iyer

Ashish Vidyarthi plays Dilip Iyer who yearns to become the chairman of the Sunflower Society. He wishes to make society the happiest place to live in, and hence with him brings a committee of people who interview everyone who wishes to stay in the society. A list of traditional notions is what Dilip Iyer brings to the web series representing a number of people around us. He has issues with unmarried people, divorcees and even is not comfortable with the idea of homosexuality.

Mukul Chadda as Mr. Ahuja

Ria Nalavde is his daughter Paddy Iyer who paints the younger generation and their outlook to such principles. Then we have Mukul Chadda who portrays the character of Mr. Ahuja who is a college professor. And Radha Bhatt as Mrs. Ahuja is his typical supportive wife. They too soon become suspects in the murder case.

Acting

Sunflower gave Sunil Grover finally the stage that he deserved to showcase his vast versatility. He passes thought remotely, and is let down by the screenplay. His weird behavioral patterns, habits that stand out in public all contribute to a dark character, a character which the writers failed to explore more. Sonu Singh has a lot of potentials to build that intensity that any thriller requires. But the poor execution can be held responsible for it.

The rest of the cast of Sunflower is an already established crew. Ranvir Shorey is an absolute delight to watch and along with him, we have Girish Kulkarni to assist him in his task who again is a terrific actor. Ashish Vidyarthi has shared screens regionally for so many years already. Mukul Chadda just adds to the ensemble cast with his sheer skillfulness and experience in the field.

(drawback): One of the major downfalls of the web series is the storytelling and the way in which it is designed. The cast brings so much potential into it, even the characters they portray have so much scope and faces that can be explored. But the out and out storytelling of Vikas Bahl abandons them.

Furthermore, as we dive into the series, the writers seem to have lost focus on what they truly wished to achieve. Sunflowers start off on a promising note, with a murder upright and suspicious behavior and characters all around. But after the second episode, the investigation fades into the background as the director goes on traversing other pastures on the field, and the lush green meadows of the murder mystery are soon forgotten. It is then brought up again by the end of the series only to leave the audience awaiting for too long and disappointed in that manner.

Sunflower Season 2

Without giving out any spoilers for season one, we know that it ends on a cliffhanger. The murderer still runs free. Hence we are sure to see the second season of Sunflower. But as of now there hasn’t been any official announcements or talks going around. But we can expect the return season by mid-next year.

Conclusion

Sunflower fails to bloom. But the possibility of a second season still gives a little hope. A return second season can see the characters explored more, thus doing justice to the cast and the plotline as well. Sunflower spans at a length of eight episodes which range from 30 to 45 minutes long. The cast is strong and gratifying to watch, but the storyline will leave you wondering “when’s it ending?” over “who’s the murderer?”
